S88-CAN Converter: Bringing the DSD2010 Turntable into a Zimo MX10 Layout
https://youtu.be/QZAkGPZVkvI?si=0nbCTevyUqwKBEew
How do you use DSD2010 turntable controller with a Zimo MX10 command station that doesn't read S88? Here's a small module that bridges the two worlds — and transforms how you automate your engine shed.
The problem
The DSD2010 uses the S88 bus to report turntable bridge position, track occupancy in the depot, and end-of-travel sensors in real time. But the Zimo MX10 command station doesn't speak S88. Without that feedback, turntable automation has to rely on timers — you wait X seconds and hope the rotation has finished. It's imprecise, unsafe, and impossible to make truly reliable.
The solution
This converter reads the S88 signals from the DSD2010 and re-broadcasts them on the Zimo CAN2 bus, posing as native StEin occupancy modules. The 64 inputs from the DSD2010 instantly become visible in STP — or in any other software that speaks the ZCAN20 protocol — exactly as if they were genuine Zimo StEin modules.
What this actually changes
Automation shifts from timer-based to event-driven (trigger-based):
• The software knows at every moment which track is aligned with the bridge
• A rotation doesn't end after X seconds — it ends when the bridge is actually in position
• Movements are only authorized after track occupancy has been verified
• Safety is managed by the software based on real information, not on guessed delays
• Automated entry/exit routes for the engine shed become reliable and repeatable
Technical specs
• Platform: M5Stack Core2 + PWRCAN module
• Emulates 8 virtual StEin modules (64 S88 bits)
• Bus: Zimo CAN2, ZCAN20 protocol, 125 kbit/s
• Built-in web configuration interface (Wi-Fi)
• Touchscreen for live diagnostics
• Compatible with STP and any ZIMO MX10-aware software
